If I upped the number of hatchets to 12, then, would it be overstocked to do the remainder?

No.

The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. [unknown source]

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If youíre going to take it under your wing then youíre responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]

Just wanted to revisit this and say thanks for all the input! I got the N. eques and the White-finned tetras (H. Bentosi or H. Rosaceus depending on what website you read) and both were such fantastic additions to the tank!

The tetras are beautiful, active, mostly mid-level swimmers, and lots of fun to watch. They add a nice level of activity to the tank and are great visually with their size and color. They're active, and voracious eaters (we call them our piranhas at feeding time) but are peaceful.

The N. eques remind me of seahorses for some reason. They also love to eat and I just love their angular swimming preference and subtle beauty - the browns and reds, with a hint of blue.
