I moved this post out of the older thread and started a new thread. While the topic is similar, the issue was not, so best on its own.
To your question, first, what species do you have? If you need help identifying, the most common ones are in our profiles. The species is important, since those in Carnegiella occur in very quiet waters and need this (out of filter currents) to be settled. The larger species are a bit different, though in my experience they too like to get into quiet waters. Rarely do I see any of these fish remaining close to the stronger flow near the filter return, and in my 4 and 5-foot tanks they certainly could if they chose too.
Fish naturally expect food to be carried by on the current, so they may face into it from time to time. They also need time to settle into a new environment, and may spend more time in the flow initially.
