Question congo vs emporer tetras

Does anyone care to comment on the plus and minus of congo versus emporer tetras? I am looking to add a new variety to my 55 gallon planted tank (lots of hiding places and canopy of plant cover). Right now I have a pleco, 2 black neons, and 9 cory cats (4 are tiny babies right now). The tank has been established for 4 years.

I want to know how each breed does in relatively harder alkaline water as I live in southeast Tennessee. Also how will they do with the types of fish I currently have? Also my cory cats spawn with regularity and how predatory are either of these tetras toward smaller fish?

In the past, I had a gold gourami who was aggressive toward cory and I don't want them terrorized again.

Thanks for your input!

Well, I suspect either fish is going to be pretty predatory towards tiny corydoras fry. I'm surprised even the black neons don't go after them. It's pretty unusual that you even had survivors!

If it were me, I would increase the size of the black neon school and then go with the Congo tetras. Emperor tetras just look too similar to the black neons you've already got. Neither fish should harass adult cories.

I agree. I'd love to have some myself but there just isn't any room left in my tank. Congos are beautiful fish.

If you don't stand up for something you'll fall for anything...

Thanks for your input on the tetras. One last question I haven't seen replied to yet: Do you think the harder alkaline water here will be a problem?

I was surprised too when I saw the cory fry at first, then got used to a couple making it out of every spawn. I put eggs in a breeder net last week to see if I could get any to hatch in safety and have 9 fry. I am not sure how to feed them, but am working on it and they are bigger since I saw them yesterday. I am posting about them in a couple of places on this forum but not sure how to link you to it if you wanted to read about them. I have pics in one post of the cory spawning in the fish breeding section.

Shoot Coryologist a pm about raising the fry.

As long as the fish you're buying come from similar conditions, the water shouldn't be too much of a problem if you're just keeping the fish. If you were trying to breed them, it might be an issue.
