Common Hatchetfish questions.

Hello,
So I'm just doing some research for my future aquarium. I really like the hatchetfish. But, I can't find certain information about them. It says they're schooling fish, but other places say small groups. What size is ideal? How big do they get? I've read up to 1.5 inches, and I've read all the way up to 3 inches. I'd prefer smaller, as I'm also going to have a school of glowlight tetras, and like everything to be generally the same size. I also want to get some cherry shrimp. Will they try to eat them? It's going to be a 100 gallon fully planted community tank.
Thanks
Jackie

Hatchets like to be in groups, so 6 or more is ideal. There's a few different species - marbled, pygmy, black winged. I have marbled and they're about 1-1.5 incehes. They wouldn't bother any shrimp you had as they stay glued to the water surface 95% of the time. Check out the fish profiles here for lots of info on them Tropical Fish Profiles

Thanks! I was looking at the common/silver hatchetfish, but the marbled ones are so pretty and stay smaller. So many choices. I'm glad I'm doing this research so far ahead. It's interesting how many tetra are on there too.

I have silver and common. Silver is bigger, and in some stores they call common hatchetfish silver hatchetfish. So, check for the line on the common hatchetfish before buying. They are skittish, and in a 100 gallon I would have 10-15. They will not bother shrimp because they are strictly surface dwellers. They will only go down if they are very scared.

You've been led to our profiles, and there are several species included. As noted, all will jump through the smallest openings. And I mean smallest...I've had these fish for many years, and only this week I have lost two that jumped out during the night through the sliver of space at the heater.

My favourites are the species in Carnegiella, of which there are 3 in the profiles; they stay smaller, are more colourful (even the "silvery" one, plus the marble) than the larger species also in the profiles.
