Hi,
this is Heiko Bleher and I saw this threat and wanted to tell you all the following:

1. Cardinal tetras are being bred in large quantities already for a number of Years in Europe - in the Czech republic alone about 80,000 monthly and more even in Russia. Also in Indonesia now large quantities are being breed. But naturally the majority in the pet shops still come from wild imports.

2. You should never keep 2, or 5 Cardinal or neon tetras together only, they are group fishes and as shown, 30 is a goof number, but even more is advice able.

3. You only loose the fishes almost all the time, because of the source. If you buy a quarantained, well established and eating well fish in the shop, than you should have no losses. Unfortunately many do sell their fish without having them acclimatized and therefore you will always loose some. So watch out what and where you buy the fishes...

Advice from one who collects them and has worked with fishes all his live - see also my website:

and
Aqua, International Journal of Ichthyology

Now merry Christmas and a very healthy and happy new year to all of you at Fishforum.com

always
