Black Tetra Compatibility

So, in my 10 gallon tank I have 3 black skirt tetras.

In a few weeks, once my cycle is done/almost done, I want to get 3 more fish, so that I could have a proper "shoal."

So, my question is- Would penguin tetras shoal with my skirt tetras? If not, is the only option skirt tetras?

I like the skirt tetras, but my dad thinks it would be boring to have only one type of fish. It is my tank, though, so if it's better for the fish to have 6 of one kind, than I would just do that.

Thanks guys!

I think you need more skirts. They will be much happier and healthier in a group. But, I also recommend that because penguins are pretty peaceful and might get really bullied, especially in a small tank.

But most I just responded to say that I LOVE your sig "Waiting for someone to correct what I just said"! Its hilarious and true and I hope we all maintain such a good attitude.

LOL Thank you, thank you :) I figure I'm probably going to be corrected a bajillion times on here so I might as well admit it proudly! :D

Stick to the one species. A 10g is not much room, even for a group[p of 6 tetra (they will--or should--grow).

Shoaling fish need to be in a group for several reasons. Leaving those aside, I'll jump straight to what can occur if they are not: stress, and this brings on aggression beyond what you might believe possible. Aggression is a fish's only way to "lash out" when it is stressed severely. And Black Widow Tetra [another name for black skirt] has a tendency to be a bit nippy anyway, so that would likely be aggravated.

You can read more in our profile, click on the shaded name. Profiles of most common fish are under the Tropical Fish Profiles tab, second from the left in the blue bar across the top. Each profile give recommended numbers for shoaling fish, minimum tank sizes, and other info.
