Unhappy Betta eating all my tetras food!!!!

I have a 5 gallon tank with 1 betta and 5 neon tetras. When I feed my betta he eats his food, but when I feed my tetras i have to sink the food so i use a safe stink thing and push the food down because the fish are mainly bottom dwellers. When the food goes down my betta eats soem of it. How do I stop this? I dont want my betta to die because I overfed it.

And when i put the food I turn off the filter so the food doesnt get sucked in. Is that OK?
And when I turn teh filter on again, the food that sank to the gravel are pulled up into the water. Is it poisonous for my fish to eat that?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(P.S.) I'm only a kid

hi
i would say to you, perhaps feed the fish at the same time.
you won't have to worry about over feeding,i don't see that the tetras food
will hurt the Betta.
i don't think you need to turn the filter off,the fish should be able to eat with it on.
you don't want lots of food resting on the bottom of the tank, feed small amounts
so all the food is eaten, the fish should take the food while it moves through the water.
if you have uneaten food on the bottom of the tank i feel that you are feeding too much,
the uneaten food will rot,and that will affect the water quality.
:)

when you set up a new tank, hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor, that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.

Thanks,

But if I turn my filter on the filter on the food is getting sucked into the filter.
And when the food goes in if its too big my tetras tear off a part, eat it, while the rest settles to the bottom. They are bottom dwellers so i sink the food for them because they dont come to the top.

Thanks for you response.

I have 5 neon tetras in with other community fish. The other fish are faster and tend to eat the food before the tetras have a chance to get any. I went to my LFS and purchased sinking flake granules. They sink as soon as I put them in, allowing the tetras to eat at the middle of the tank while the other fish eat at the top. If you feed all your fish at the same time, the betta will be occupied with the food at the top while the tetras have a chance to eat the sinking granules.
