I have two Asian Upside Down catfish who all seemed fine at my LFS, but no in my community tank, they just hide all day. I'm afraid they aren't getting food.
Does anyone know if this is normal?

well i have had them for about a month now, and no my LFS didnt have any hiding places in the tanks there, and now that you mentioned it, i do see them out more often at night time then during the day.
Well you might want to try to remove all the hiding spots during feeding with the lights on to see if you can train them to get used to the lights and know that it is safe with the lights on too.

Some have managed to get their nocturnal fish out during feeding by doing that.

I was in a similar boat as you. I just picked up a Synodontis Eupterus (featherfin catfish) and when he was at the LFS, he was sucking on the side of the glass near the top of the tank. Once I brought him home, he hides in his cave for hours on end. He also would only seem to scavenge the bottom of the tank at night.

It has been a little over two weeks since I have added him and now I see him out during the day, fighting for algae wafers with my cories. I'd suggest giving him time and keep to a regular feeding schedule to make things a little more consistent.

I've actually 'trained' my fish pretty well I think... When feeding I have always put my finger in the tank, about 1", before feeding them. I did that for little over a year, now when I put my finger in the tank, all the fish, except my syno (he will learn), instantly come to the top of the tank and wait for food. It's pretty cool seeing all the fish just rush up to the top of the tank.
