pygmy corys

i saw some pygmy corys today and really wanted to get some, but i had some questions first.

the tank is a 10 gallon- currently housing 6 harlequinn rasboras, and one male cherry barb. first question- do i have room for them?

next question- how many could i have without pushing the limits of the tank's bioload? (i wanted 4 of them).

so far, my rasboras are exclusive to the top level of the tank, and the barb is usually on the middle. they are all small, peaceful fish, so i figure they would get along with Pygmys.

ok, and one more question - how are pygmys in reference to water conditions?? are they delicate or fairly hardy? are they as finicky as oto cats? i haven't had much luck with otos.

I can't help you with all your questions, but I have been looking into getting some pygmy corys as well. Most of the info I was reading mentioned keeping them in groups/shoals of 6 or better. So you may be cutting it a little a short with 4.

But - and this is only my personal opinion - I do think that would over crowd your tank (with 4 or 6).

Hope that helps,

Personally I think you would have room for them but they do prefer groups of 6 or more as was mentioned. 6 IMHO would be alright in the tank but adding nothing else. They're very small and produce little waste. Thje rasboras also produce little waste. Just keep up on your water changes.

Pygmies are pretty hardy, certainly not as finicky as ottos as you worried.

You'll have no problem with 6 in your tank. I wouldn't get fewer than 6. Frankly I wouldn't get fewer than 10 if I had the room. That said, 6 will be fine. What Julie said, though, that will fill you tank.

They are not as delicate or hard to acclimate as ottos. You may lose one or two, but you probably won't lose more than that. Acclimate over the course of an hour or 2 and try to slowly mix tank water into the water they came with.

You'll find that they'll swim at all levels of the tank. I have a school of 10 in a 33 flat back hex with 15 neons, some platies, and a Clown Pleco, and I usually see them in the mid water when the morning sun hits the tank.
