Pleco, not eating?

I just got a pleco from someone who has highly neglected it. He was in a tank with sitting water, no filtration, no heater. I figured he'd be better in one of my tanks until i could rehome him. I bought him some algae tabs the first night i got him. I've put in three (at different times) tabs now and he hasnt touched them. I've even turned off the light in hopes he would eat. The package says two hours, what would happen if i left it in over night? I'm afraid he will starve to death. Is there anything else i can try? Is he just in shock from being back in good water? Any signs to look for as far as finding out what his deal is?

Leaving food for pleco overnight would be OK. I would remove what wasn't eaten the next morning. Uneaten food on bottom of tank =Ammonia= dead fish. Many plecos will eat just about anything while some,, have specialized diets. Check out www.planetcatfish.com to determine what particular pleco you have and what is required for proper care. Water changes, water changes, along with not overfeeding=healthyfish.

You may want to try some blanched zucchini.
One of my plecos throws a tantrum if I do not hang up a piece of zucchini for him to eat at night.
He will shake back and forth and up and down the glass, until I feel guilty and give in, its kind of cute.

Thanks. Will leaving the algae tab overnight add ammonia or does it have to be longer than that?

If your tank is cycled, it will be fine.
