Pleco id, no pic!

OK, I have a pleco cant get a pic of. He is gray with white/cream dots. I suspect he is L017 or L171. I can find no info on them. Planet Catfish is useless.

Facts:
Currently 8" including tail, which is angled, but not quite lyre.
Normal size dorsal. Have never seem it upright to count rays. He has a few black spots in his normal sucker mouth. They look somthing like a shadow for teeth.
He has nostrels like my Rhino pleco. He has NO motteling. Just dots. The dots are not symetrical below the first few rays of his dorsal fin, but are round dots everywhere else.
He hides all day. He seeks the heater area in an 80* tank.
I have not seen him eat the cucumber, even at night(lights are out now and other pleco is chowing down).
He uproots my small plants, but does not eat them.
I am not missing any fish and he is in with guppies.
In physical form his outline is the same as the chocolate.

Any help is appreciated.

It is by looking at these that I narrowed it down to the 2 l species.

I was hoping someone with experience or more knowledge of plecos could tell me more, based on the description of characteristics, as the PC people wont risk doing so w/o a pic.

Just what did we do before pics on forums?
Ho hum...

We used books to identify our fish.....or just didn't worry about it.

Any idea where to find a good book? My concern is for Dotz. I had to move him in with Hershey. Its a 75G. Dotz kept tearing up the plants in the 30G. If DOtz is peaceful, I'll keep him. If he is likely to be a more aggressive or less vegetative I need to find him a new home.
Thanks for help.

Have you tried looking at L102 (Snowball pleco)? Those are the most common spotted ones I've seen in an LFS.
