Most will grow at least 10 inches and produce double the bioload of a fish of their size, meaning a 10 inch pleco would need ~20 gallons of water. Unless you have 40 gallons and no other fish, i would wait to find otu what species you have before getting another. Also they eat algae as their main diet, if you do not have a lot of algae growth, they will eat your plants. Then they will starve, most dont reach max size because they starve, be prepared to start feeding algae wafers when the algae in your tank is gone.
