Hi i was interested in getting pictus catfish. I have a 55 gallon that i havent stocked yet, well i had red bellied piranahs but i gave them away because i didnt like them at all, not good fish to keep, boring & dirty, anyways, what kind of fish could be housed with these guys??
I would like a few larger fish with these guys, but im not sure if they can be housed with anything else. Any info would be great, thanks!

Oh yeah and i would like to keep a few different kinds of fish in the 55 gallon, i like assortments of fish, some at the top, some at the bottom, you know. If anybody could give me a list of about 5ish different fish that could be housed together in a 55 gallon including the pictus catfish thats what im looking for. thanks!!

You should get 3 or 4 Pictus, 2 to 5 Blue/Three Spot/Platinum/Opaline Gouramis (They're all morphs of the same species), and, if you stick to the bottom end of those ranges, 6 Congo Tetras. It is my understanding that most Rainbows prefer harder water than Pictus cats like. Or maybe you could do 3 or 4 pictus cats and 8 to 12 tiger barbs, just make sure you don't buy them too small.

Yeah ive seen all them at a local petstore, but do they get along with angel fish? Ive heard they do. The people at the petstore told me i could have 4 angel fish and a couple of the catfish with some of the other fish you guys mentioned that(i reconized the name when you mentioned them(, what do you guys think? was he right?

i dont know about getting more than one. they do enjoy being in small groups when young, but when theyre older they can be very territorial towards other pictus catfish

generally thoguh they are peaceful fish, and can be kept pretty much with anything thats big enough that they cant eat

really? the guys at the petstore said they would be fine their whole life if you buy them together and keep them together. And they have dozens of them in a 30 gallon tank...all of them about 4 inches long. but they have lots of hiding spaces and its basically one big cave for all of them

Well for most single species per tank fish are ok in overcrowded conditions (only for temporary situations), there are so many of them that one cant tell the difference from the other and since its overcrowded they cant set up there own territory. It works with african cichlids as well as some damselfish tanks but im not sure about pictus catfish.

i was told that they best in groups while young, and if theyre 4" then theyre still young obviously but territorial when fully grown. having loads of hiding spaces would help, and i fancy that if there were LOADS of them rather than just a few then the agression would be very evenly spaced out but in a smaller group the agression would be more evident. its upto you if you want to try it, maybe they will be fine, was just a wee warnng that they are known to be agressive to each other when adults like i said.

were you planning on getting a group of them or just the one? if you do go for a group then please let me know how they get on - either pm me or better yet so everyone can read it, put up another post about it later on. id be very interested to hear.

they are beautiful catfish, mine is rather the "centre-piece" of my tank, and theyre very active so im sure youll enjoy him/her/them when you get them :)
