Exclamation Peppered cories losing Barbels!!

Two of my peppered cories have lost a barbel on one side, I think it might be becuase of the substrate but everywhere i look the type i have seems to be fine, should i switch to sand???

anyone have any other ideas besides sand?

definatly switch to sand, they will hurt themselves and thier bellies on gravel! you could put a layer over the gravel, but eventualy it will just mix together

Sand is the often-recommended substrate for bottom fish like Corydoras that root in it continually, but small-grain gravel will work fine if it does not have sharp endges. I have mainted dozens of Corydoras fish over 15 years with gravel.

There is some thinking that nitrates cause barbel loss, and others think detrius on the substrate (the bacteria associate with it). Dr. David Sands, an acknowledged authority on Corydoras, has written that barbel loss is not connected to the type of substrate unless it is sharp. As long as the gravel is fine and smooth in your hand, it should be OK.
