Ottos

I have a 75 gallon Perfecto tank with stock lighting. I run the lights about 8 hours a day.

The tank has been set up for around 3 years.

I lost a lot of fish a couple months ago. I then gave away everything but my 6 cories.

About how many otto cats would be enough to control the algae in my tank?

The answer depends upon several things. First, otos will only eat brown (diatom) algae and normal green algae. They will not eat hair or brush algae, or cyanobacteria (the green "slime").

Do you have plants? Otos spend all their day grazing surfaces for algae, and the more plants the happier they will be. If there is insufficient algae, they sometimes will eat tablet food, but only if they are well established. Otos should only be added to an established aquarium that has a fair bit of algae available for them at the beginning. They frequently die off quickly if not.

In a 75g tank, with lots of plants, a group of 5 or 6 would be fine. Otos do better in groups, minimum 3.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]

Thanks,

Tank has been running for over 3 years. Plenty of algae, plenty of FAKE plants. I may make this an planted aquarium.

Cheers
