I know you said pleco's get too big for your taste, but have you looked into Bristlenose plecos?
They're small by pleco standards (up to 5 inches, usually smaller)
and eat a wide variety of algae, including a few, like beard algae, that are hard to get rid of otherwise.
I've never been able to keep my ottos alive more than a month or two... I'd vote for BN pleco...
(It probably has an equal or smaller bioload when compared to the group of ottos you'd likely get)
They're also very peaceful, unlike the other plecos (when they grow up, that is)
-edit- If you want it to stay under 5 in, make sure the latin name is "Ancistrus temminckii", because there are a few different strains of BN... All stay under 8, but the one I mentioned is the smallest I believe.
They will also, occasionally, breed in a community tank. The babies will eat the same foods as the adult. Second thought... the snail might eat the eggs. :-/
