Question Oto Catfish - Bloody Tail?

Saw this on one of my Oto's today. Not sure what to make of it. Ideas?

Sorry, it's a bit blurry.

What else is in the tank? It looks like it got beaten up by something. Is it swimming/eating ok?

That's the only thing I can guess. It dosen't fit any photos of disease that I've seen since the red is not actually on any part of his fins, just between the dorsal and tail fins, and it is all the way around his body.

I don't have any fish that are large enough to that large of a bite, I do have six Serpae Tetra which are known to fin nip. I've never seen any aggression outside of the school, but that dosen't mean it dosen't happen. But like I said, I don't think their mouths are large enough to fit his entire body in, but maybe...

Aside from the apparent injury, he acts normal.

The only other fish are four Bronze Cory and two Oto Catfish, they're harmless.

Well, moot point now as he didn't survive =/

I wonder who tried to eat him.

I also tested the water to rule that out, 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite, and 10-20 Nitrate. Should be fine in that regard.

Sorry to hear that you lost your Oto :(

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

Do you have any strong filters in the tank? Or any spot where he could have gotten stuck? Sorry about your loss :(

Nope, just a 20 gallon HOB with a foam pre-filter on the intake, the tank is a 20 gallon so the filter isn't over sized.

The only thing I can think of is the serpae tetras that would tried to attack the otto. at least for now. Are the other ottos the same size? They could have become territorial, but not sure if that could happen

That's sad. Sorry about your Oto. I love them too.

Make sure you pick up 1-2 more for your remaining Oto as they're social and like buddies to feed with.
