number of otos?

Hey, i have a 46 gallon tank with 4 otos in it. I am getting a terrible brown diatom outbreak currently and i was wondering if anyone knows how many otos i can get before i have too many algae eaters? I'm ok with them getting rid of the algae as long as they dont end up eating it all and then starving. I have algae wafers but i would prefer to ahve them able to graze naturally and not by wafers.

I have a 55g with 5 ottos and as soon as I see more, I'm going to get 4 or 5 more. They are small and have a small bioload. With a 46g, depending on what else you have in there, I would think that 4 more would be fine. See if you have a good fish store who will let you bring them back once the tank is cleaned up.

I'd highly recommend against using fish to control algae. Ottos are voracious eaters and it takes a lot of algae to keep the supplied with food. Few tanks aside from those who's owners actively encourage algae growth can supply ottos with a sustainable food supply that way. You're going to need to supply them with algae wafers eventually.

A diatom outbreak will eventually clear on its own. If its a visual problem you can wipe them off as needed but it will eventually clear on its own if you're paitent. Until it clears on its own it will keep returning over and over. Your ottos will knock it down but once they are out of the tank the bloom will return.

Wait it out. Your current ottos will work on it and eventually the problem will take care of itself.
