sorry to see you lost one.
i've never kept them myself,i think of them like rams,just not a fish
i can keep alive.

when you set up a new tank,hide an extra
sponge or two behind some decor,that way you have
something seeded for you next filter.

Ditto (well my ram does just fine :P).

I tried them over and over again for a few months a year or so ago but had no luck. Same story - they really went to town on my algae (and even some of my live plants) but then would go from little eating machines to dead in the blink of an eye.

I was also going to suggest the "grow your own algae" method but willow beat me to it. Some otos will really only eat algae so you might have to give this a shot.
