I'm a bit concerned about my new Julii cory that I got just yesterday. He's in a 10 gallon quarantine tank, and I'll be putting him in my big tank when his quarantine is over. He hasn't been very active since I brought him home. He cleaned the gravel a little bit yesterday, but this morning he seems to want to stay still most of the time. He's not looking sick in any way, just not the active little thing that my other cories have always been. Could it be he just needs adjustment? I know other types of fish sometimes take a while to adjust, but I've never had a cory that didn't immediately start to clean when I brought them home.

Well, it could be that, or it could be the fact that he needs a shoal. Cories are shoaling fish, and its usually recommended to have 5+ of each type in a shoal. they are MUCH more active in a large shoal. I have 9 bronze cories, and they love playing.

It may well be adjustment. As the previous response noted, corys like groups. [I realize this one is in QT, and will assume you have others in the tank he will be going into, but if not, I wold get a few more.] They also do not like being moved at all; any new tank will usually cause them stress, this can't be avoided, so keep things calm, ensure good water. Don't feed if he is not searching the substrate; they can go for several days without food, and if they are unsettled this may be best. For one thing, uneaten food will more quickly foul the water causing more stress.

It always is best to buy corys in a group, if you are adding to your existing stock, try to get 2 or 3 (or more, depending) at a time. This will settle them a bit.

Thanks guys! You are always so reassuring. I do have two other cories in my 55 gallon, and he will go in there with them just as soon as he's out of quarantine. Good news, he's more active this afternoon and evening. I saw him nibbling at an algae wafer earlier, and he's starting to move around more, so I'm hopeful he'll be fine. Again, thanks so much!
