I have sand in one of my tanks, and I put it in a bucket, tilted the bucket a bit, and ran the hose in it until the water came out clear. then I added it to my tank and put water in cup by cup, pouring it onto an ornament as not to disturb the sand and once is was full enough for the cup to be on the bottom completelty submerged, I coutinued but by letting the tank water meet the cup water, and slowly pulling the cup out. My tank isn't 20g, though. I used Hermit Crab Sand.
