My Bristlenose Pleco has no bristles!!!

Hello everyone, So about 7-8 months ago I bought what was advertised as an "Albino Bristlenose Pleco". It was less than an inch, so tiny. In that time it has tripled in size (approx. 3 inches) its head is about the size of my index finger, and no sign of bristles at all, completely smooth and rounded as a standard pleco. It was only $6.00, same price as the other baby plecos in the store. It is a beautiful pleco, I absolutely love it. Very active all day long, very healthy. Does anyone know at what size it should (or should have) started growing bristles. Or do I just have an Albino Pleco. Unfortunately my camera is not working, so no pictures Also any info on sexing plecos would be awesome, so I can stop referring to it as "it" Thanks everyone for your time.

Most likely it is a female as the females have no bristles or a select few!

I've never had any problems with 'Impulse Buying'. They're just animals that I forgot I had planned to get.

bristle nose pleco with no bristles!

I bought two tiny albino bristle nose plecos about a year ago. One is twice the size of the other and fully bristled! The other is bristle-less. They are on their third cluch of eggs and I have 24 2 month old fry ready to go to new homes!

I would definitely say that you have a female!!

Thank You Everyone, all the info was incredibly useful!! HappyHappy, great photos, beauties. Any chance there might be a way to sex juveniles? Would love to get a guy for my girl. Unfortunately the only available B/N plecos available are tiny (1" or less).

I see if you can look online like craigslist and see if there are any bristlenose males in your area - or facebook... Just make sure your getting bristlenose catfish/pleo, not the common pleco!
Or if you don't want to go with the online route, just buy 2 - 3 more youngers, you bound to have a male and then you can sell off the others...

Male BN pleco

I just got lucky. I bought two and they were a pair. I have some fry now and am sure one or two to be male since they are twice the size of the others --- but still would not bet on it. I would agree with previous post to buy 2 or 3 and you will be able to tell as they grow. My male is almost twice the size of the female......
Any chance you live close to charlotte NC??

Thanks AussieJJdude and happypappy , Yeah I'm gonna keep trying, I live in southern Arizona, aside from Petsmart and Petco, There's only 1 specialty store reasonably nearby that does special orders. I don't know about the rest of the country, but I miss the "good-ole days" when there where specialty shops EVERYWHERE!!! Back in the mid 80's, my first part-time after school job was at a petshop cleaning aquariums everyday. Ahh, memories!
