Well, that is how some fish are. I guess it's up to you if you think he's pointless or not. He is a nocturnal fish so some amount of hiding during the day is to be expected.

I have two suggestions for you:
1) Try diffusing the light in the tank so it isn't as bright during the day. Floating plants like water lettuce are very helpful.
2) Consider adding a moonlight for nighttime viewing. The dimmer, blue light shouldn't bother him, but you'll still be able to check him out and appreciate his fishy-coolness.

Hm sounds interesting. I already have x1 blue moon light one x1 white 30 watt tube. So it isnt that bright just now considering the depth of the water. I wonder if in time it will com eout more? There are plenty of shaded bits not in full light, some quite dark.

You could try a set daytime feeding schedule for a couple of weeks. Figure out what he likes. I have read about folks who keep Tatia perugia who never see them with the lights on unless they put frozen bloodworms in the tank, then they come boiling out of their holes in the driftwood. If you get him used to being fed with the lights on at the same time every day, you may see him more often.

I have an African Featherfin Catfish and he likes to hide a lot also in his cave with our pleco. He comes out to eat and swim for a few seconds and then goes back and hides. Its normal for him. We have no other fish that would be deemed aggressive so i guess thats just the way they act. Our pictus catfish hides a lot too in his log. lol
