Crocodillians have something similar on their bodies called dermal pressure receptors, they sense vibrations and changes in water pressure. They aren't fully understood, they're little black dots, mostly running along the face. Anyways I watched scientists doing experiments, and even in broad daylight, if they covered the DPRs with some vinyl glue, even when fish swam right by them the crocodile didn't react. I guess it's probably similar with sharks and these guys.
