Do Plecos eat wood?

Recently the subject of plecos requiring wood in their tanks came up in another thread, and today I happened to come across a new article on the subject, so thought I'd pass it along for interest.

As noted therein, it used to be thought that the fish actually digest the wood, but now ichthyologists are not so sure. The author, Dr. Jonathan Armbruster, is an emminent authority on the Lorticariids, having recently described several new species including a couple in our profiles such as the Striped Plecostomus L199, Hypancistrus furunculus.

The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. [unknown source]

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
