Do pepper cory cats exclude one another?

I have had my three pepper cory cats for about three months. I have always heard that corys like to be in groups of three or more, but mine are usually only seen in a pair while the other one is by itself. I have been curious about this for a while now because it it not always the same fish that is by itself. I was thinking about getting three more corys (not necessarily pepper corys) for my tank. Any ideas or comments? Thanks.

I would follow the recommendation of having a group of 5 or more of the same species. I currently keep 5 different species (40+ cories) of cories and I have seen the mixed species schools. The mixed schools still do not act like a group of 5 of the same species. I am sure there are some species that would work well together but mixing significantly different patterned cories together is not going to help. No matter how many cories I have in one of my tanks, the pair of skunk cories I have will never come out of hiding when I am near. They are just not comfortable in the tank.

I also have noticed that the sex of the fish will contribute to how they act together. My full grown females are much more aggressive when it comes to food and seem to hang together more often. The males seem to sit back and wait to ensure it is safe to feed and hide more.
