Question Cory freakout

Ok, I finally succumbed and got a second (and my last, this time I mean it!) 10 gallon tank. Until today it was inhabited by my 2 surviving pygmy cories, I *really* wanted pygmies, but I wanted something better suited to my area, so I did some reading and got 3 Sterbai.

Tonight is their first night in their new home, lots of pool filter sand, 2 swords, a fern, and a nifty moss covered coconut pagoda that had "cory" written all over it. I started about 5ml of Stability yesterday and continued that today with the new fish.

I'm used to the normal cory freakout maneuver of swimming up and down the sides of the tank, but 2 of the sterbies are doing what can best be described as a relay race very close to the surface...back...and forth....back....and forth...the 3rd sterbie and 2 pygmies are acting more cory-like in seperate parts of the tank. Do they miss being in a 20 gallon with 40 other cories?

Was it a mistake to only get three? I was reluctant to add too many fish too quickly to such a sparsely populated tank, especially after what happened with the pygmies. I have been considering adding another tomorrow, and/or two on Saturday. Any thoughts?

Sterbai they are my favourite cories! How big is your aquarium, and is it just the two pygmy and now three sterbai? I want to get like 5 other corys to to add to my 5 peppered cories. I want either sterbai or something like panda or bandit or something fancy. I added 6 cories to my aquarium right away.

As a general rule, I believe, schooling fish are supposed to be at least 5. But I wouldn't think too much of it. Fish just act weird some times. Just be glad its not an 8" Bichir smashing into the tank lid, it's enough to make you jump from 7 feet away

Thanks to me, my family lives in a zoo. Could the always increasing number of fish, 3 Snails, 9 Shrimp, 3 Caudates, Dog, Cat, and 2 Birds POSSIBLY have ANYTHING to do with it?

It's a 10 gallon...so far just the 2 pygmy and 3 sterbai, and a ghost shrimp, which I swear was holding a stopwatch.

I want to get 1-3 more sterbai. After that, I might be pushing it, I'm not sure...the whole stocking limit thing still has me a bit confused. I remember in another post that Byron said that cories feel better with some darters above them, but I might not even have room for endlers with 6 sterbai in a 10g.

Being brand new to the tank the cories are behaving as a stressed fish would. When I first added my clown loaches they did this same thing for about 36 hours. Your cories should settle in soon. What are your water parameters currently and are the cories the only fish in the tank?

If you don't stand up for something you'll fall for anything...

Last night everything was zero exceot nitrates may have been close to 5. Nothing but the cories in there so far. This morning one of them is doing the relay race thing, the other 2 are picking at the sand. I'll check the water chemistry when again when I get home from work.

I wouldn't be surprized that you find them all settled in this morning. How many endlers were you thinking of adding? With five cories (possibly 6) and a few endlers I don't see a problem as long as you are faithful with weekly water changes. I have one tank that I have pushed a little over the common *rule* of stocking but I'm anal about my weekly tank maintenance procedure, doing a 40% w/c every week. Your tank is planted and that goes a long way towards Mother Nature's own filtration system and keeping the water ideal for your fish.

Cool...I usually do 25% changes weekly (my bucket is 2.5 gal...lol).

As far as tankmates go, I wish there was a small mid-upper level swimmer that did well alone or with a pair...but failing that, do you think endlers or some of those nano-raspboras are the way to go? That won't overstock a 10 gal?

Unless someone with cory experience thinks differently, I may add one sterbai at a time until they look "happy" or I get to 6...whichever comes first. I want a shoal with as little bioload as possible.

The two pygmies are healthy, but not happy...I wish I could rehome them, but no one sells them locally , probably our hard water here.

I know what you mean, i want the same. Just a beautiful pair roaming the top while the bottom is covered in cories

I wonder if a pair of dwarf gouramis would work?
