Bristlenose Pleco question

I love the prehistoric look of a Pleco and want to add one in my tank. I have a 20g with 4 Platys and a few fry. GH-19, KH-4, PH7.5. I want the smallest breed possible, would that be a Bristlenose? Is my water too hard? If so, can I mix R/O water to soften it a bit? Can a Bristle nose be happy as the solitary Pleco?

Most plecos are generally solitary creatures. Clown plecos are the smallest I can think of, though there are peckoltias that are smaller.

Not sure exactly what species I have but her max size is about 5 inches. She has been the lone pleco in my 55g and now in my 29 for a couple of years. She has been fine going solo in both tanks. But this is without seeing how she reacts with another BN. I have noticed that she hides more in my 29 now. I use R/O water regardless because I keep cardinals considering my tap is ph7.6

How can I tell if my BN is male or female?

If it has bristles on its face, it's a male. If not, it's a female. I'm not sure at what size they start to develop - mine is a female.
