Yes you can do this, but don't forget to keep root structure in mind. The roots will get quite thick and long, basic tree roots. This is my only concern with keeping one in a smaller aquarium. You don't want the roots to take over the tank, even if you can keep the tree pruned.
I know the roots can be trimmed to keep this under control to some degree, but there is a limit to how much you can do this once the trees begin to mature. I'd hate to see you spend yrs nurturing these trees only to have them die later. They're so pretty when they're grown!

Well when that happens I can always use them for something else. I'm sure I could find something. Sides as u pointed that takes years right? I would love to see them in or near my pond! Could even use them in a refugium for a salt water tank for a bit then acclimate to fresh when it gets to big for that... From understanding these plants are very versitial and will adapt to lots of conitions as long as it is done slowly.
