what size tank for my light?

I have a currently unused dual 24" T5HO fixture stored away in a closet since it was too much light for my planted 20 gal tall. With appropriate bulbs (10000K and actinic?), what would be the biggest tank I could match with this fixture for a basic beginner's marine tank?

Biggest tank would be 29g. Dimensions are 30"x18"x12". That fixture should have extendable legs.

it has the wire type supports that extend out horizontally

I was initially thinking about a 26 bowfront (24" wide, 20" tall), but then thought maybe the 36 bowfront (30" wide, 20" tall), I'm just not familiar at all with the lighting requirements for SW

I guess this all depends on if yoiu plan of having corals or just fish. Corals would not do well in that 20" deep tank with those T-5's. But would be ok in the 18" or less depth. The tank width is ok with what you've chosen for that. Reasoning, the fixture you have only has 2 lamps, correct?

yeah, just the two, which will need to be changed as the ones in it now are meant for plants

don't think I would try corals - I'm assuming they would be more difficult in general

Little more difficult for Corals yes. That lamp will work for Fish.
