Used tank questions for a newbie

I am very interested in doing a reef tank and I have some questions. I went to a local shop last weekend and there ready to go 50 gallon tank kit is 799.00. Way more then I want to spend on just equipment. I have been looking on Craigs list and I am finding complete set-ups with fish, rock, corral for under 500.00 for 75 gallon tanks. My big concern is moving the tank. Some say they will assist with move and set-up but me being a newbie would not know how to do it by myself. Is it relatively safe if we transport their water as well? I would hate to get it home and set up and everything dies. There are also 29 gallon nano tanks for sale with rock and some have corral for just a couple hundred too. Brand new the tank is 299.00. I am just looking for some guidance so I dont make a huge mistake. Thanks

do your reading and research now, before buying. after a few months or so of research, then search for a tank, deals will still be there. check your area if they have a local reefing club. you'd prob. find a better deal and/or nicer setup there too.

just for the record, never move a tank with water in it, or even sand, rocks or anything. a tank should be moved empty to not put the silicon seal at stress.

welcome to the forum.

If you get the big tank, you can move everything using 45g tubs from Lowes, Home Depot. Store as much of the water that you can , as this will help with the tank not going through a huge cycle once you set it back up. You can put the rock in to 5 gallon buckets along with the sand. the 45g containers take 2 guys to move, but you can put more in them, like the fish and the tank water. And as far as moving the tank with some water and some rock, it can be done, I've done it a couple times with a 125g tank. Use the furniture dollies, the little ones with 4 wheels low to the ground. Get a 2 wheel dolly and lift the tank as high as you can, slip the 4 wheeler under it, and one guy can roll it around.
