I'm not quite the expert yet, however, have you been keeping a log? Have you seen a spike in ammonia at all?

This sounds typical to me. If you have live rock, then the bacteria are already present in the rock to process ammonia and nitrite. Nitrate is the end product (for now) so it makes sense that you have a nitrate reading.

In time, bacteria will develop which process Nitrate into Nitrogen Gas, which leaves the system naturally. In systems with proper sand bed depths, this process can be so efficient that Nitrate actually drops to zero. You will also achieve some denitrification from the live rock, but this is less significant than with deep sand beds.

The presence of micro fauna on your glass is a good sign that the system is beginning to mature. Have you had a diatom bloom yet? Do you see any coraline algae growth? Are your alkalinity and calcium levels within the range you are looking for?

If all of these questions are a YES, then you are pretty much ready for livestock.
