To sump or not to sump?

With regard to my 5x2x2, should I bother with a sump or not?

yes.

a sump adds to the water volume of the tank. the more water volume you have, the less things change as fast and the more stable it becomes. a sump is also a great place for a skimmer, heaters, carbon/phosban reactors and other equipment as well as a refugium with macro algaes.
