Question Question re: tank cycling

I am cycling a 55 gallon tank with live rock. The nitrates are still very high, so I know it's not right yet. This morning there was a small spot that looked like brown film, and now all of the rocks are covered in it. Are these the diatoms I should be expecting? How long do they last? Should I do something to get rid of them? It just looks so wrong.

Oh yeah. That's diatoms. You are right where you want to be. They will be gone in no time. After that you should start seeing all the microlife like copepods and other microfauna. How long has the tank been running?

Ditto Wake's comments.

Also, now is the time to start testing and adjusting calcium and alkalinity. What are your current readings?

A quick test just now:
NO3 - 80
NO2 - 0
KH - 300
pH - 7.8
Ca2 - 420

The tank has been running with live rock for about 3 weeks. I ran it for 2 weeks without the lights on (per my LFS) and started to turn on the lights a little less than a week ago.

Your alkalinity is very low, given the calcium reading. What salt mix do you use?
