Newb Help For 150g!

Hello All,
I am a newb to saltwater and have been reading posts here and on other forums for quite a while. A coworker is giving me a 150g aquarium to get out of his basement. All he has is a tank and I am curious to what filters, lights sump ect... I should look into purchasing. Brands, models any thing would be helpful. Now I know this is not a cheap hobby, but the most economical options would also be appreciated. I would like to start a reef, but I am more then patient. How much live rock is needed? 1" or 4" sand bed? If we are allowed recomendations on where to purchase would also be helpful. Thanks!

The basics of your setup will never change. You want a 4'' sand bed, live rock, sump system, and protein skimmer. The use of a refugium and UV sterilizer are highly beneficial. And don't forget the quarantine tank.

If you want product and brand ideas, I suggest reading the "build" threads in the pictures and video section of the forum.

Lighting requirements will vary tremendously depending on what you intend to keep in the way of corals. Go ahead and make a decision about that so that you can buy once. Ask me how I know...

Go ahead and buy a good skimmer. I'd recommend Reef Octopus or MRC (My Reef Creations), the latter being my favorite. Money spent on a cheap skimmer will be money wasted IMO.

Good Luck!
