New Marine Aquarist Here

So, just wanted to say hey to everyone as I have been reading these forums for a long time as a guest before deciding to registering so I could see all the awesome tank setups.

Im an off and on aquarist, that is to say, when the opportunity arises, I get equipment when I can much to the Mrs' concern. Thankfully I have two little girls, 5 and 1, that love water, love fish and love their freshwater tanks.

I understand that marine vs fresh are two completely different monsters and thus why all the reading and research I have been doing over the past 8 months. I will read and reasearch till I cant see straight before I even attempt to start something like this, and besides, helps build patience and my girls can learn the benefits of research, no matter how much the 5 year old wants to see "nemo" in a tank.

So far, Ill be starting a 30 gallon FOWLR for now. Ill have to do some finaggling for the Mrs. approval to further my purchases here and there but I have an idea.

Ill start with the marco rocks package of 40 pound key largo rock and bahama aragonite sand due to affordability and recommendations
2 circulation pumps, heater and protein skimmer for now

I have the plan set up in my head and on paper and if there are any other suggestions, Im all ears. I dont mind waiting for the cycling to be done, no matter how long the time frame. This will be my learning experience on marine maintenance as I plan to go bigger in the future and use the 30 as a sump/refugium forthe larger tank. When I need to, I have a 15 to utilize as a sump for my 30.

Thank you to everyone for the wealth of information I have learned perusing this site.

Hello and welcome to the forum

Looking forward to your progress and don't forget the pictures. We love pictures!

Animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.

So a slight change in what I got, as I decided to go with a one stop shop kind of deal...so far...

CaribSea Arag-Alive Fiji Pink 40lbs, AquaticLife Internal Mini Skimmer 115, (2) Hydor Koralia Evolution Pumps, Jager Thermostat Heater, (2) AquaticLife Expandable LED Light Fixture, CaribSea South Seas Base Rock 40lbs

The stand for the tank is framed up and Ill finish it within the next 2 days before staining. Pictures will come shortly, and yes, the stand is overkill but better to be sure it will hold a few elephants.

And if anyone has any input as to the Berlin method of filtration, please speak up.

UPDATE:

Ok, so a few pictures from my album covering the build so far. I try to take pics as work progresses.

Frame for the stand for the 30 gallon. Yes, super strong but then again, I have a 5 year old and a 1 year old that like to run and bump into things.

Just a quick look with the tank on top and a possible 15 gallon sump in the future.

Panel installation and flush doors with salvaged hardware from a desk I threw out.

And a look with the tank on it.

Trimwork and stained in a minwax bombay mahogany poly seal stain with the back of the tank painted.

RO/DI unit has been cycled and now collecting the tank water today. All equipment will be at the house by lunch. Tank will be moved, equiped, and aquascaped tonight hopefully as the seawater will be mixed throughout the night in the 35 gallon trashcan bough and cleaned specifically for water storage.
