Well I've got an empty 55 right now, and after getting a shot at starting a salt water tank my enthusiasm for turning that 55 into a cichlid tank just isn't there. Not to mention I just really hate 55 gallon tanks.

i hear you. ever since i started saltwater i dont have much interest in fresh anymore.

a 55 will make a great sump, esp for a 75 but if you plan on using that as your display they arnt so great because of their width. your best bet would be the 75 or if your looking to go smaller a 40 breeder because they are nice and wide. its also smart to keep in mind future upgrades while getting equipment...they are bound to happen

The narrowness of the 55 is why I despise them, and why I have no intention of ever using it as a salt water display tank. I may use it for more "small fish" as my wife calls them. I still want some rummy nosed tetras, gourami's, and german blue rams. I was thinking about the 55 and how as a sump it'd be a pretty linear set up.

Well the research will continue. It's only a matter of time until I have a salt water tank. Just not today.
