A UV sterilizer is simiply a device that kills bacteria, parasites and other micro-organisms that are in your system. This device is the best thing to fight ick. It is perfectly fine to have both running on your system. You really don't need to run the UV sterilizer all the time really only when you have disease's or an algea bloom in your tank. I run both of mine 24/7. With the protien skimmer and the UV sterilizer working all the time your water will stay alot clearer. I hope this was enough info. If not you can PM me with more questions. :)

Just a little thing, I've never seen a saltwater with an air pump. :D

I had some bad algae start "getting happy" and I realized it was because I was using tap water with a conditioner. Tap water was contributing to its growth. I was told by my lfs (my regular guy which has been very helpful) that I could aslo add some powerheads in the areas where it is bad. Hope this helps! It has helped me. He also told me to use R/O water to do water changes and replace the evaporated water instead of tap water.

OMG my chromis just got swallowed! "Spit that out!"

Thanks. If you don't mind, which UV sterilizer brand name are you using?
