I would like to have the shimmer effect and have the colors stand out. Is there something I could do the get this or would I have to change the lighting completely? Is this lighting good for a coral reef tank? If not what is the most affordable way to get the right lighting for a coral reef tank and have the shimmer with great colors for coral and fish?

Only way you will get the shimmer effect is from LED lights.

Are the bulbs T5HO (high output) or regular bulbs? If they are regular you will be limited as to what you can keep in the tank.

There are LED fixtures out there at are not too expensive, but for corals you will need a brighter fixture over regular bulbs.

Metal Halides and LED's create shimmer, none of the others do.

For corals you need to look for 3w LED.
