just curious...

hi

i'm mainly a freshwater guy, but I recently went to my LFS and just for fun asked about marine tanks. the guy told me that on of the necessary components was live rock, and he explained how they make it, with leaving the rock in the ocean for some time. Technically, since i live near the coast, couldn't i make my own live rock by just leaving it there for a week or two and coming by to pick it up later? just wanna know.. i don't and am not planning on starting a marine tank, anyways.

yes however after leaving it for a month or two+ the chances of pollutions and/or theft are pretty high being close to the shore. idealy if you were to do this it would be best to boat your rock out to a private location, preferably close to a reef and leave it for a good period of time. i would check local laws ( they vary everywhere and if someones sees you taking rock it will be tough to explain it was originally your rock )

honestly IMO the surest and safest way is to cure it yourself in a spare tank/ bucket/ trash can with a powerhead. this way you can monitor the process and add critters of your choosing vs the risk of un-wanted hitch hikers by using rock from the wild. you would use a same piece of "wild rock" though to seed your other rock to eventually all become live rock.
