I am contemplating whether i should place the other 90lbs of rock back in the tank or just go ahead and cook it. I'll probably put it back check the nitrates over the next couple days to understand if the origional live rock is the source. I need to make sure the tank is stable before adding any critters but i do understand the need for a clean up crew etc.
It can be dangerous to cook live rock. Also, you will kill any beneficial creatures you have on it. Unless somehow you got some contaminated rock, I'd put it back in the tank. Didn't you say the water you tested with the LR was good? Nitrates at or near 0?

I didn't actually mean cook the rock. I just put it in rubber made containers with new salt water for about 48 hours then tested the nitrates. Everything checked out ok. So all rock is back in my tank. Replacing the sand bed and a 90% water change brought nitrates down to under 5. This is manageable and better than 160 ppm.
