Do you have to put extra shells for red leg hermit crabs in your aquarium?? I read on the net there was no need to. But it sure looks like I have a few blue leg crabs after the red leg ones. Have not found any dead but you will see the blue leg ones hanging on the red leg ones.

Yes. They, like any other hermit crabs, need shells to change in and out of for when they grow bigger and bigger.
