Biomedia = Ammonia >> Nitrite >> Nitrate >> water changes.
Live Rock and Arrogonite = Ammonia >> Nitrite >> Nitrate >> Nitrogen Gas which naturally leaves the system.

Bottom line, biomedia is filtration for a FW aquarium and will only do harm in a system with adequate live rock and sand.

Protein skimmer, activated carbon, UV, live rock, aragonite sand, and power heads.

As to the spare tank, i just don't see any reason for additional filtration beyond this conversation.
