many things. give details so you can get detail answers. That could be from water quality, too much food, too much fish, too much light and for too long of a period, too much phosphate, silicates, etc. i could go on and on.

are you keeping corals? if not you can drop lights period from 0 to 24 hours but less is better so if it were me i would only use lights no more than 8 hours and thats includes the 2 hour dusk and dawn period. because nutrients + lights+ length of lights on = algae. where are you getting your topoff water and water in general to make SW? if it's from tap that could be the problem. I'd use distilled or RO water. are you using a protein skimmer? that is one of the best ways to get nutrients out of the tank before it can break down into phosphates in the tank also.

phospgate remover

.

it's expensive stuff but well worth it. it will remove phosphate in your water but the best way is to limiting the amount that enter your system by using a RO/DI filter for all your water needs. that's more expensive for startup but cheaper because you use less rowaphos media.
