First salt tank.

Hey guys, I have been wanting to do this for a really long time so I figured wth. I got a 45 gallon hex tank and stand super cheap so I figured why not. I was wondering if anyone could direct me to some good reading or sugestions on were to start. I have been told that I shouldnt use canister filters but the way the top of my tank is I cannot fit an hob filter or anything like that. Currently the only things I have are an under gravel filter with a submersible powerhead powering it. After buyting the tank I read that hex tanks are horrible for fish. I really only wanna keep either one puffer or a couple clown fish in it and do a FOWL setup.

fellow newb here ; )

check the stickies on this forum and other forums. They seem to answer the immediate questions.

Most of the forums advise against gravel or crushed coral for salt water (advising sand), and typically advise against any form of physical filtration (ie. undergravel, bioballs,or even a simple screen filter). Reason being is if you have one they want you to rinse it almost daily which very few people would actually do. Instead emphasis is placed on the natural filtration in your tank, and internal powerheads to assist. a protein skimmer may be the only thing you need hanging on the back, and those are more descretely narrow than a typical freshwater hang-on-back.

Good luck.
