Question Algae issues

If I don't vigorously scrub my tank at least once a week large amounts of algae build up! I have a 90 gallon tank w LR, Fish, Inverts and soft corals. My Parameters are T78, SG 1.024, pH 8.3, dK 10, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 0-5 and Calcium 420-440. Should I be checking phosphate. I have 4 T5 HO (54 watts per bulb w a combo of 700s and actinics) and a plain fluroscent light w 2 40 watt 50/50s (standard 90 gallon tank). Aside from changing the amount of light, what else can I do?

if your talking abouts scraping the glass this is routine maintnance. i suggest picking up a magnet scraper for an easy clean ( the more frequent you do it the easier it cleans ) and then monthy or so get in close to the sand to scrape coraline from the glass.
or are you talking about bad algaes around the tank? how often do you feed? what do you feed? what skimmer are you using? whats in the tank? what does the algae look like? pictures? how old are your bulbs?

I agree with onefish2fish . cleaning the glass more often keeps it easier to manage. I sometimes use a toothbrush to get to clean too. the magnet cleaners are excellent. make sure they dont come in contact with the heaters. it could malfunction them. always unplugg heater in water changes.

I guess I'm talking about routine maintanence. Initially the algae was a rust color. I was told this was a diatom bloom. Now it's more purpleish. The bulbs on the lamps are about 3-4months old. The Protein skimmer is a coralife needle wheel skimmer for up to 125 gallon tanks and I have 2 UV filters. I feed my fish once a day, mainly frozen brine shrimp, krill and mysis shrimp. Once in a blue moon I'll put a little brown seaweed in the algae clip for my Tang. I have a CUC (Turbo Snails, Tonga snails, Nassarus snails, small blue leg hermits and 1 large red leg hermit) a Black spine urchin, a long tentacle anemone, Marine Beta, Maroon Clownfish, Yellow Tang a couple of soft corals, and a clam.
