I figure I should start on my sump.
I want to use an Eheim Compact+ pump with a footprint of 5x4 roughly, I was thinking about making the return part 7 inches. (7x12)
I have a hang on protein skimmer but if I ever wanted to get an in sump one I was going to make the PS spot 8x12 inches, that only leaves about 11 inches for the middle refugium section with 1 inch between baffles.
Should I shorten the pump section to 5x12 maybe? I want the middle to be as large as possible and have room in the first part for a skimmer down the road.

I know the basic rule of thumb is that the refugium should be at least 10% of the volume of the DT. If you fill that up at least seven inches, you will be at 4 gallons (11" x 12" x 7" = 924/221 = 4 gallons), so that should suffice. RM is right though, go with an external skimmer and make the fuge as big as possible.
