white algae with

I just noticed some white algae-like growth in my tank. There are several individual "plants" on my java fern leaves. The look like little stick-figure hands with tiny (1-2mm) arms and 5 hair-like tentacles growing from the tip. They are all about the same size, but they are so methodical and, well, purposeful looking in their appearance that I was alarmed. I'm not usually an algae freak.

Any ideas of what it could be? they are impossible to take photos of because of their small size and constant flowing movements, like fingers reaching out just waiting for a chance to take over my tank

---edit:
so I did more research and came up with this, could it be hydras? They look an awful lot like what I have in my tank. Any experience with these, anyone?

So I just did more research and found that I can add fenbenzadole (dog de-wormer) and it will kill the hydra. Scary thought but sounds tempting.

Dog dewormer, wow. If it is Hydra it certainly doesn't sound like something you want in the tank. Good luck. Let us know what you end up doing. I wonder what de-wormer does to the fish? Interesting

Hold on there for a sec before you ditch the doggies dewormer in the tank lol....
You said it looks like white algae....Hydra looks more like mini worms if you will..."White alage" could also be any debris that's growing fungus on it (food leftovers etc etc).
Make SURE first what you're dealing with there before you act if you can't show us pictures

It's definitely hydra

If I had know that when I first started the thread I would have chosen a better title for the thread! And placed the thread in a better category.

I think it's a result of 1. overfeeding 2. new plants or new food (i've read that they can migrate in with brine shrimp) 3. my new water change schedule (less frequent). There is contradicting theories about whether hydra in the tank are symptomatic of good- or bad- water quality. I personally think if I just kill them, do a good water change, and stop overfeeding the problem will go away. It's just weird that they popped up in both tanks at the exact same time.

An interesting link on hydra (and proves my theory--that overfeeding has been detrimental to hydra population control):
