Where do you buy your plants? Whats your favorite plant?

After some problems (lack of maintenance/trimming, one tank got cloudy, etc) some of my tanks are kind of bare. I used to like sweet aquatics, but they fizzled out and are gone. Do you know of any cheap plant suppliers? I like stem plants and such cheap, but variety is also important... I've had my eye on some Java Fern var 'Phillipine', Pellia, and proserpinaca palustrus..

Right now I need to plant all three of my set up tanks and have plants left over for some emersed experiments (a 10 and a 20l)

Want to reccomend species? Sounds fun! Here are my setups:

10 Coldwater Mosquitofish tank
Ph: 7.8, bright light, 26w of cfls
Shells stacked up for a background, black sand subtrate. 1 5" Crypt Blassii, dwarf sag rooted and floating, and overrun with elodea/anarchis

10g Livebearer
Ph 7.3, Mixed livebearers and cories, medium light (20w of cfls)
2 small crypt wendtii green, Driftwood with java moss, a couple stems of creeping jenny and bacopa caroliana, a tiny echinodorus parvula, andhairgrass plugs that aren't doing a thing.

20 Gallon Long (Rainforest/Swamp)
Ph: 6.3, Lots of tannins. A pair of dwarf flame gourami that spawn regularly. Several fry. Very low light (1 tube)
Large pile of driftwood, 5 tall and skinny crypt wendtii red, 3 Echinodorus Bleherae x Parvula, dwarf sag, duckweed.

Feel free to reccomend plants and suppliers. I like contrast, and unique plants. I even want to get some really hard ones like star moss and blooming crypts for emersed culture.

I get as many plants from local sources as ai can.

For a 10g setup I use 4-6 bunches of anacharis, 4 vals, 4 small potted (cryps, anubas) and a single smazon sword.

At my current location anacharis is considered invasive and har do get.

I used to really really like petsmart when they had a seperate tiered tank for plants. Now that they have the gel type plants I go back to my lfs.

on line I do like www.aquariumplants.com

But they are expensive especially with shipping.

my .02

maintain Fw and marine system with a strong emphasis on balanced, stabilized system that as much as possible are self substaning.

have maintained FW systems for up to 9 years with descendants from original fish and marine aquariums for up to 8 years.

With no water changes, untreated tap water, inexpensive lighting by first starting the tank with live plants (FW) or macro algae( marine)

I've tried Planted Aquariums Central and Live Aquaria.

Planted Aquariums Central I would rate as "Good" while Live Aquaria would be more of an "Okay".

Planted Aquariums Central gave good quantities and usually with stem plants they throw in a couple extra. Everything I have got from them has survived except one Red Tiger Lotus.

Live Aquaria was okay, most everything came okay however it's all mass produced if that makes sense. Kind of like Petsmart if they actually took care of their plants. A few things didn't make it for me, but that may have been my issue rather than theirs.

I've heard people recommend mikeswetpets (Mikes Wet Pets) off Ebay, but I haven't personally ordered from him.

I have used aquariumplants.com exclusively for about a year now. As was mentioned earlier, they're not cheap; however, my plants have always arrived well packaged and in good condition. They have a Black Friday sale going on right now with specials on bunch plants and shipping. If I had a good local source, I'd probably go that route. Since I don't and since aquariumplants has such a large selection, online has been my best option. Good luck.

I know this is a little late, I've been browsing through the plants section on here for the past hour or so and just saw this thread.

Anyways, for future referance: I've gotten about 80% of my plants from aquabid. Mikeswetpets on there is awesome, never had a problem with him and anything I've recieved. He's the only person I've ordered from and I wouldnt buy from anyone else unless he didn't offer that specific plant.
He has a large selection in all different levels of care.

the other 20% of my plants I've either ordered off classified sections of forums or found at an LFS.

10 HM, 3 HMPK, 5 HMPK fry
8 German Blue Ram, 5 Green Dragon BNP, 4 Albino BNP, 4 Calico BNP, 6 Red BNP, 5 Kuhli Loaches, 2 ADF, 7 Peppered Cories, & 6 Tiger Endlers + Fry
12 full time tanks, 4 NPT, 6 QT/Breeders

+1

IME they are also one of the best plants to balance out and stabilize tank operation. And extremely effective in sucking out carbon dioxide and returning oxygen.

I do have to harvest them from time to time and poke down some that pop outts the sand from time to time though.
