when co2 injection necessary?

I have a 120 gal tank with sand substrate and I would like to add some plants. I was thinking some...micro sword, java fern, temple leaf, and water sprite. My question is, is co2 injection necessary for these plants in such a big tank? I understand that without co2 additives there can be drastic ph swings etc. which can stress out fish but and what time would one want to switch over to c02 injection?

The only time that you actually need CO2 is if you have fairly high light and lots of plants. With heavy growth in a tank, the plants will quickly outrun the natural CO2 supply and it becomes up to you to supply the difference. In lower light situations or low plant density situations, CO2 is not needed. The drastic pH swings come about when you inject CO2. The typical CO2 injection will drop pH about 1 whole unit, in my case it goes 7.8 to about 7.0. I run my CO2 a bit on the light side. When it switches on with the light, the pH drops and when it switches off at night the pH jumps back up. The swings do not seem to be affecting the fish in the tanks because the water is not changing mineral content, hardness, with the swings.
